Asylum The asylum, or mental institution, symbolizes frequent travel, asceticism, the heeding of God and reading of the Holy Quran, the stoppage of income, the end of wedlock, the abandoning of children, repentances, the return of religious faith, relief from worries, and sometimes diphtheria (the suffocation disease, to borrow the expression of Al-Nabulsi). It could also represent the bathroom, as madness was believed by the ancient Arabs to be associated with demons and because, like the bathroom, the mental institution is a place where people take off their clothes, show their private parts, and exhibit repulsive manners. For some interpreters, the madhouse refers to the school, because, there, the inpatients were educated by force, in ancient times, and taught to read and write and know the Quran. Pearl Pearls and other jewels symbolize beauty, perfection, and sexual passion for women and boys. Raw, ill-shaped, or scattered pearls are a reference to children and to good words; hidden pearls refer to exceptionally beautiful girls, slaves, or servants in view of verses from the Holy Quran about Paradise: “And (there are) those with wide, lovely eyes, like unto hidden pearls … Lo! We have created them a (new) creation and made them virgins, lovers, friends …” (“Al-Waqiah” [The Event], verses 22–23, 36–37.) The pearl also alludes to a male child who won’t live. Perfectly shaped or aligned pearls represent the Holy Quran and good learning. Minaret The minaret refers to a man around whom people gather to listen to his teachings about philanthropy. It also represents a person who invites people to embrace Islam. Holy Book If one sees himself spreading the pages of the Holy Book on a flat surface in a dream, it means that he is seeking wisdom which he will get, or that he may receive an inheritance. If one sees himself putting the Holy Book over his shoulders in a dream, it means that he will receive an appointment, or be entrusted with a duty to guard, or that he will memorize the Holy Quran. If one finds himself trying to eat the pages of the Holy Book in a dream, it means that he is a regular reader of the Quran. • Seeing the prophet Nuh (Noah): (1) The dreamer will have a long life full of tricks and all sorts of trouble from the enemy, but will triumph and thank God profusely as mentioned in the Holy Quran. (“Al-Israe” or “Bani Israil” [The Children of Israel], verse 03.) (2) The dreamer will marry a pious woman who will give the dreamer children.41 (3) The dreamer’s children will disobey him and might become apostates and die as such, arousing his wrath and anger. (4) The dreamer will become a scholar, be patient, and obey the Lord. (5) After overcoming enemies, the dreamer will be given a very high position only to be disobeyed by friends. But the dreamer will ultimately prevail, by the grace of God. (6) The dreamer will have plenty of enemies and covetous neighbours, but God will save him from their evil eye and will avenge him. (7) The disbelievers will be destroyed and the devout favoured, despite formidable power wielded by the heretics. (8) The dreamer will triumph over hostile folk or family and might regret that victory later on for all the pain it will bring about. (9) Drought will come to an end, and rain will fall heavily, as Noah’s era was marked by abundant waters and the famous deluge. (10) Relief. Worries and sorrow will be over. Garden (Flower garden) A garden in a dream means repentance, and repentance from sin in a dream means a garden. Watering one's garden in a dream means having marital relations. If one sees his garden dry in a dream, it means that his wife has commenced her menstrual period during which he is not permitted to have sexual intercourse with her. If he sees someone else watering his garden in a dream, it means that such a person will betray him with his wife. If one sees himself entering an unknown garden with its trees unattended and its pasture unkempt in a dream, it means distress and worries. A garden in a dream also represents a woman. They both need water and they both bear fruits or children. In this case, if the garden is interpreted to represent a woman, then its trees and fruits represent her tribe, family and children. Lost (Getting lost) If a man of knowledge sees himself lost in a dream, it means that he will benefit people with his knowledge, that his teachings will spread widely and that he will be remembered for a long time after he dies. Getting lost in a dream also means bad luck. If one loses a garment or a house in a dream, it means extra expenses, repairs, or taxes he will pay for his property. Incident - Allah giving piece of iron and a sip of vinegar It is related that a man came to Jafar As-saadiq (RA) and said: “ I dreamt that Allah gave me a piece of iron and a sip of vinegar. What is the Interpretation of this dream?” The Imaam replied: “Iron depicts hardships, for Allah says in Quran : And we have sent iron wherein is material for mighty war. But it is possible that your children may learn this tradeoff Dawood (AS) (for he was a blacksmith by trade). As for vinegar, it means you will be afflicted with a disease from sometime, at the same time acquiring abundant wealth. Eve • A woman seeing Eve in her dream: (1) Will make her husband unhappy and give him worries for befriending unworthy persons. (2) Will face a terrible ordeal, because Eve was the first woman ever to have menses. (3) Will become a midwife. (4) Will give birth to virtuous children. (5) One of her children will become a killer. (6) One of her children will become a martyr. (7) If separated or away from her husband, will go back to him. Satan • Satan dictating or teaching the dreamer certain words: He will make false statements, annoy people, or recite incorrect poetry.
• A demon entering the dreamer’s body or swallowing him: A trip fraught with dangers.

Key The key symbolizes access to learning, especially the Holy Quran. It also means benefits, a safe, blessings, and support. Keys could refer as well to children, boys, messengers, money and the piercing of mysteries, or the pilgrimage to Mecca (Makkah). Other interpretations include the man and the woman, the former penetrating the latter like the key in the keyhole, the wrapped up baby, and the dead in his grave.
• Holding a key: God will respond to the dreamer’s prayers.
